Concordia Creeps
By: Anyesha Mohammed
As is the case with any old buildings in a city as old as Edmonton, ghost stories tend to circulate and follow people through the ages. And with our school founded in 1921, Concordia is no stranger to ghosts and ghost stories.
Like the story of Al Gersbach, the spirit of Concordia Theatre haunts actors and stage crew during production. He erases names from playbills and signs his own obsessively, desperate to be remembered on stage even after death.
Through the halls of the library, students reported hearing the rattling of bones and the creak of a jaw opening and shutting. Chills running down their spines, students have admitted seeing the ghastly sightings of an old skeleton roaming the space, the whisper of a name following him wherever he goes. With luck, may Larry never meet the skeleton who stalks the grounds in search of him. And with some extra bit of luck, hopefully, Larry doesn’t have a residence in the student housing areas as the men’s dorms seem to get regularly visited by a ghostly choir.
Any students who are brave enough to make the trek up three floors to get to class should be aware of the spirit that may or may not be walking alongside you. Legend says that a young girl had been leaning against a banister when someone had come up and pushed her over, and now, years later, she joins students as they walk through the stairwells. That feeling of something dragging you down as you walk up the flights? That’s the young girl stopping you from going all the way up, making sure you won’t join her as she soullessly floats up and down the various flights of stairs that connect throughout the building.
Student-athletes who practice on the soccer field located in front of the Ralph King building should watch their ankles and avoid the south part of the field, as the large tree planted on the field was planted with contempt and severe hatred for Concordia players by an unknown rival team. As a result, any player who even steps foot on the field and encounters the tree at any point will experience an injury shortly after, preventing them from playing in the following game. Already in the past month, two players from the men’s soccer teams have practiced and have been unable to play, and one from the women’s soccer team has experienced an injury so bad that she is out for the remaining season.
The most chilling story that lingers in the air of our fine establishment is the one that centers around Schwarmann Hall. According to legend, there has been an apparition of a teacher from the 1960s walking through the halls, following students. The apparition tends to drop the temperature until it’s so cold that students can see their breath. Doors mysteriously slam, and there are feelings of unease that always follow these events. Some students even reported feeling someone grab their shoulders only for no one to be there.
So next time you find yourself staying late, watch out for the shadows. You never know who or what may be lurking.
