The Nostalgia of our Childhood

During this reading break and throughout this pandemic, entertainment companies have been providing us with a steady stream of content to keep us entertained. From Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, to HBO Max, these major streaming companies are pumping out shows to compete with our entertainment fix needs. However, one thing that this cool cat of an entertainment writer has been doing is re-watching some of the shows that defined my interest in popular culture from my childhood. I truly believe that we need a little bit of nostalgia in our lives and that it can be good for our mental health. As I write this article in a room surrounded by lightsabers and other collectibles, I am constantly surrounded by things that bring me a sense of nostalgia and over the course of this article I hope to share some of that with you. So, get on the magic school bus and come on this journey with me.

Firstly, there are amazing shows like 6teen and Pokémon that will always be staples in the timeline of popular culture. It may be worth brushing up on your Pokémon because February 27th is Pokémon day, and this year is the 25th anniversary. For entertainment they have both Post Malone and Katy Perry confirmed as celebrities confirmed for the big day. Another show from days past that has recently been stirring up some news is the Total Drama franchise. There have been rumors as of late that at some point two new seasons will be coming out in which there will be a return to the island. So far, all we have is a poster featuring the silhouettes of popular characters, the most notable being Owen. But as a fan of the show, I want to see the return of some characters that never got proper screen time, such as Dawn, The Goths, and the relationship between Noah and Emma. Now these are just some things that I hope to see, however one thing that will make the show as awesome as it once was is the amazing voice work that the talented Christian Potenza brought to the amazing character and host Chris McLain. Total Drama will always be a huge staple in the history of Canadian Cartoons and while the franchise has been somewhat quiet these past few years it would be absolutely refreshing to see this show back on a regular airing schedule. But these may just be the dreams of a humble nerd.

Other shows that I have been revisiting that I recommend you revisit are:

  • Courage the Cowardly Dog
  • The Power Puff Girls
  • Phineas and Ferb
  • The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
  • Dexter’s Lab
  • Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide
  • Flying Rhino Junior High
  • Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends
  • My Life as a Teenage Robot
  • Power Rangers
  • Hannah Montana
  • X-Men the animated series
  • Batman the Animated Series
  • Winx Club
  • The Wild Thornberrys
  • Rocket Power
  • Samurai Jack
  • The Weekenders
  • Thundercats

These are just some of the examples of entertainment to get back in touch with. I know truthfully that our readers come from various generations and that read our humble newspaper. Some may feel more emotion towards the unjust cancelation of the show Firefly, while some may have strong emotions to shows like iCarly. It would like it noted that these are just examples of shows that I used to watch, and I do apologize if your nostalgic shows are not represented. These are just some examples of the many shows that worked to help define the entertainment and popular culture industry as we know it. If you have any suggestions on things you would like featured in my articles, please feel free to voice them. If they exist within the realm of popular culture and allow me to avoid spoilers for readers, forward ideas to me at rhaslam@student.concordia.ab.ca and voice any suggestions you may have. Until then “later days”.
