From Students, For Students
The Bolt News is the student-run news publication of the Concordia University of Edmonton. Student writers submit articles for both the bi-weekly print editions and online editions of the publication. They cover a variety of topics ranging from local happenings and places of interest to world news.
The editing staff keeps the paper running smoothly by divvying up the workload across four positions:
Layout Editor | Natasha Miller
The layout editor is responsible for the design of the print publication of The Bolt. Their job is to place completed articles and format them for ease of reading, as well as to format images and advertisements that will appear alongside those articles.
Why hello there!
My names Natasha and I am excited to be your Bolt Layout editor for the 17/18/ and 18/19 school years! I am currently in my 4th year of my Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a double minor in Education and Religion. I have always had an interest in design and literature, and I am so excited to be able to create a fresh look for the print edition of The Bolt. I believe the newspaper is an important of our community here at CUE. Did you know the Bolt has been around since 1953? But back then we were known as the Blue and White!
Don’t forget The Bolt comes out every 2 weeks! Pick it up in the cafeteria, library, Tegler, or in the Ralph King entrance. Not able to grab a print version? Well, you are in the right place! On this website we have archived issues all the way back to 2003 so you can read to your heart’s content. We’re also on Instagram and Twitter @theboltnews.
Talk to you real soon CUE!
Story Editor | Ester Latifi
The story editor is the first point of contact for The Bolt’s writers. They collect articles from the writers and edit them for spelling, grammar, and tone, and also provide suggestions to the writers on how they can improve their work in the future.
My name is Ester and I’m super excited to be your story editor. I’m a third-year English student with a minor in Psychology, and I’m currently trying to decide whether I want to be a speech-language pathologist or a teacher. (Whoever said that adults have their lives put together straight up lied.) I love reading books and listening to records, and when I’m not at school or at work, you can find me with a cup of tea as I’m writing a poem, reading something, or rewatching Freaks and Geeks on Netflix.
My position with The Bolt involves checking for things like grammar and spelling as well as fact-checking. I’m the first person who will read your articles, so if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to talk to me! I started out as a contract writer at the end of my first year, so please don’t feel intimidated to reach out I’m here to help! I’m not like a regular grammar nazi—I’m a cool grammar nazi. If you see me walking around campus or in the office, stop and say hi!
Online Editor | Lauren Hollman
The online editor is The Bolt’s social media liaison and web manager. They are the primary publisher of our social media content and archive articles here on our website. They are also responsible for keeping the website social media profiles’ other information up to date.
I’m Lauren Hollman and currently your Online Editor of The Bolt! I primarily deal with social media and keeping you guys updated on what to catch in our latest issues. I’m a 4th year Political Economy student with a minor in Philosophy, and will be pursuing a Political Science Masters in Germany after I’m graduated!
I love my position at The Bolt because it gives me a chance to reach out and connect with you guys through mediums such as Instagram or Twitter. I’m a big fan of travel, coffee, and all things news related. If you see me in the halls, stop me and say hi!
Catch you later CUE!
Editor-in-Chief | Nick Clark
The editor-in-chief oversees all the operations of The Bolt. They have final say on what is published and what is not and provide direction to both the writing and editing teams. They also are the chief point of contact with advertisers and the students’ association.
Hello, Bolt readers! My name is Nick and I’m the Editor-in-Chief here at The Bolt. I’m currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Management program, hoping to pair the skills I learn here with some good old entrepreneurial instinct to manage my own company in the future!
I started at The Bolt as a writer in my first year. I loved seeing where I fit in with the larger picture and how it made me think about what I was writing in a different way. When the position opened up, I was able to put my computer skills to use (and to the test) as the Layout Editor from 2016-2017 when I started as Editor-in-Chief. It’s been awesome seeing Concordia grow over that time and The Bolt with it. I’m really looking forward to seeing where we go from here!
If you ever have any ideas to pitch or questions to ask, or even if you just want to talk about an article, you can swing by our office in the Library–L279, behind the main desk.
Come visit us during our office hours if you have any questions about The Bolt or would like help with any work you wish to submit for publication.
