Animention Article

We’re at that point of year in Edmonton when everything is drab and grey. The snow is melting, exposing all the rubbish, but the leaves and flowers haven’t started adding colour back into our world yet. It can make our city a little dull to live in. A number of our fellow students chose to escape this reality and take a little vacation to Japan on March 26th. The Animention Club, English Conversation Club, and Concordia’s International Office partnered in an inventive event named “A Day in Japan”.

The idea started with one of our exchange students from Japan, Mimi, speaking to Daniil, the club president. She wanted to do a presentation about her home university, Toyo University. The event grew from that into a fun evening full of laughter and learning.

About twenty students attended and enjoyed a wide variety of Japanese snacks and candy, as well as origami games, Mimi’s presentation, and a virtual tour of the Toyo University campus. Three different teams competed using crafting supplies, as well as their own ingenuity, to illustrate a scene. It was fascinating to see how Toyo University was both different and similar to Concordia and to hear Mimi’s description of her path here. Mimi was interested in learning more about Canada’s Indigenous Peoples and saw how studying at Concordia would give her the opportunity to experience Indigenous culture.

If you are interested in learning more about the exchange programs Concordia has access to, you can visit Concordia’s International Office and find out if there is a fit for you. One day you could be in another country organizing “A Day in Canada,” sharing maple cookies, smarties, and poutine with new friends.
