From Daunting Challenge to Exciting Adventure

Tips for those just venturing out into the
world of university life

For many of us, entering college or university marks a point of transition from the structured life of high school to the independent world of higher education. It can be exciting, challenging, and completely overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be scary. Here is a glimpse into my journey as a first-year international student embarking on my path to a whole new chapter.

Arriving on campus was an absolute roller coaster of excitement and nerves. The CUE campus seemed itself to be a universe more extensive than its small size originally suggested. My first introduction to CUE took the form of a tour from a classmate. I remember wandering through the front lawn, FaceTiming with my mother back home, and showing her I made it. Unfortunately, I had to miss my orientation and, as a result, felt disoriented. However, I soon learned I was not the only one who felt that way, an understanding which came as a big relief!

Meeting New Faces

Moving from another country meant I had to start from scratch. Every person and thing I encountered was a new experience filled with possibilities. Amid this chaos, however, I was fortunate enough to meet other people from Bangladesh. This ignited a different sort of hope and relief that I hadn’t expected as I had no idea that this city was home to so many people from my home country. These people gradually became my circle here in Edmonton.

My early days in Canada were also characterized by meeting people from all different places and backgrounds. Interacting with so many different kinds of people revealed a range of worldviews and perspectives that broadened my own. My biggest suggestion for anyone starting on their university journey is to approach the experience with respect, honesty, and a willingness to learn new skills. Doing so improved my interpersonal skills and expanded my way of seeing the world. So, for anyone in a similar situation, establishing a support system helps ease the transition and foster a sense of belonging.

Finding The Path

I was fortunate enough to have some sort of guidance as I embarked on my journey here. I quickly came to understand that this support provided me with everything I needed, and I just

had to actively engage with the resources available. It is no secret that university is a place of learning, but you learn just as much outside of the classroom as you do in it. You have to learn how to balance everyday chores, keep on top of studying and homework, keep a work-life balance, stay in touch with family and friends, and so much more. Even in my third year, I am still figuring out new tactics and strategies in order to continue cultivating this independent life that I am growing all by myself.

Tips For Success

To anyone just starting out on this exciting new adventure, here are some tips and tricks from some of the biggest lessons I have learned.

  1. Start building your network early. Having a support system to lean on can help smooth the adjustment and give a feeling of community, making those early days much easier.

  2. Be open to trying new things, making new friends, and learning from unexpected places.

  3. Finding a working balance is essential for everyone. College should be fun, but do yourself a favor and be mindful of how you’re spending your time.

  4. For my fellow international students, finding a middle path between maintaining your traditional cultural identity and adjusting to new social standards may seem like a daunting task, but, with patience and assistance, it transforms into a time of substantial personal development and adjustment.

There will be challenges. There will be times of stress. But by accepting the difficulties and making the most of the resources at hand, these first obstacles can be overcome to create a worthwhile and enjoyable experience. Good luck everyone, I hope you all have a wonderful year!
