How to Have a More Positive Outlook On Your Time in University

By: Ayrwyn Cousins

For many students, life at university is very stressful, but it doesn't need to be. Here are some tips on how to enjoy university more and to walk into CUE with a positive outlook.

Attend events run by CUE staff and students;

Concordia always has fun events going on, from sport events, to crafts and everything in between! I highly recommend attending these events as you will learn more about your university and your peers while having tons of fun in the process. I have met many people at these events and have even made some very important connections with employers, other students, staff and alumni. Making connections with others through fun activities and events can make your outlook on university life so much brighter.

Enjoy your classes;

It is easy to get caught up in all the stress your classes may cause, but it is important to view your classes as interesting and fun! For instance, as a history major there is often a lot of work and research involved in my assignments which can be overwhelming. However, I always try to focus on the fact that history is a passion of mine, and the things I’m learning about are genuinely intriguing and fun to think about. Too many students focus on the workload and stress that their classes cause, and forget to really think about and enjoy the things they are learning. I implore you to go into your classes ready to learn and engage with your passions. Simply going into class with your head held high can make all the difference.

Engage in conversations with others;

Many students also find life in Uni very lonely, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There is always someone to talk to, no matter who you are. One of the best things about CUE is that you have the opportunity to meet many people and actually see them around campus. CUE’s smaller campus makes making friends, and becoming familiar with others so much easier-- not to mention the amount of clubs and activities within the school. One thing I love about university is that you can have an amazing conversation with anyone about anything and leave the conversation feeling like you learned something or perhaps have something to take away from it.

Know that you are not alone in your struggles;

One of the most isolating things that a person can go through is feeling as if you are going through your struggles alone. In university, this issue can be especially difficult. However, it's important to know that you are not alone in your struggles, no matter what they are. There is plenty of support around the campus that you can access. For example, you can receive support for mental health, technology, assignments, classes, etc. It also helps to talk to friends and other peers around you. Knowing that there are others facing the same hardships as you can make a huge difference on one's outlook.

Hopefully some of these help you to have a more positive outlook on life at university. I know that all of these have helped me in a number of ways. Have a great rest of your September everyone!
