HPV Vaccine Project

Written by: Sarah Cowan

Here in this post I have an important update to start the school year off!
HPV-9 Vaccine expansion in the Public Program in Alberta.

What is HPV (Human Papillomavirus)?

HPV is a highly contagious and the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the world! 8 out of 10 people have or will be infected with HPV within their lifetime.
Anyone who has any kind of sexual contact with another person involving oral, genital, or anal contact can get HPV.
Sexual intercourse is not necessary to get infected.

Here are the facts:

  • HPV may cause a wide variety of cancers in both men and women.

  • HPV does not always show symptoms.

  • Highest prevalence is concentrated among people aged 20-24 years – exactly the CUE demographic!

If you did not get the HPV-9 vaccine in Grade 6, you can still get it for free up to and including age 26. Contact a Public Health Centre Office in Alberta near you.
If you can not get this vaccine for free, CUE’s mystudentplan covers 80% of the vaccine.
