Market Season

Spring is a wonderful season. It signifies a time of new growth and renewal with the snow finally melting and giving nourishment to turn everything green and vibrant once again. Along with the change of the season comes a change in activities, including my personal favourite: going to markets! Sure there are some markets available here and there in the winter but nothing beats the feeling of going to a market in Spring.

What’s a better way to start off the warm weather than supporting your local community? Not to mention, Mother’s Day is right around the corner providing a perfect reason to stop by your local market and take a look around. For those living in Edmonton or surrounding areas, if you don’t know where to start with your market journey, don’t fret because I have accumulated a list to help you get started. For the sake of simplicity, I’ll stick to markets located in or near Edmonton that are during the months of April-May.

The first market I’m starting off with is available to the public year round and happens every Saturday from 7-3 in Old Strathcona. During the warmer months, the large garage doors are opened to let in the fresh air and the breeze blows through gently as you walk the isles of this popular but still quaint farmers market. There is always lots of fresh produce as well as an amazing selection of handmade goodies so it is definitely worth checking out.

The next market I want to mention is in April and one that has gained massive popularity over the past year for being fun and welcoming for all who attend: Malla Market. This market is located in Kingsway Mall and is happening April 26th-27th; though make sure to keep your eye on their socials because they host two markets each month! April’s theme is Fresh off the Market, perfect for that quaint farmers market spring vibe, and the first 20 people lined up daily receive a cute tote full of goodies. Make sure to grab a friend or the whole family and head down to check it out.

The last market I want to mention is the Divine Pop Up Petals and Pastels Market happening May 4th at the Alberta Aviation Museum. This one is absolutely perfect for ushering you through Spring and into Summer; plus, who doesn’t love florals and fun? There will be over 80 vendors to shop from and workshops available to join beforehand as well. Not to mention, there will be deluxe, goodie filled tote bags for the first 20 guests. That’s not all though, if you RSVP prior to attending the market then you have a chance at receiving a mini goodie bag! So grab your closest friends and bring them down to the market to shop till you drop.

Happy market hopping to everyone and happy Spring, Concordia!
