Winter Activities

By Abigail Lashmar

With the winter season now upon us, it may be challenging to find activities to do in our time off that makes us feel as fulfilled as our summer activities did a few months ago. I wanted to compose a list of activities that you may wish to reference during your free time when you are not sure what to do and you are bored of the endless scrolling on your phone! First of all, don’t get me wrong, scrolling through social media is nice a lot of the time! Definitely a great way to stay connected and engage with people and content that brings you happiness. This article is not intended to say this is a bad thing! I am definitely someone who often turns to this constantly though- and sometimes that makes it difficult to find other activities to do when scrolling is a really easy way to pass the time. So this article is for the time you want to find something new to try, a lot of it may be cliche and obvious things to try, but sometimes a short list of ideas makes it easier to find something you’re open to trying at the moment! Here are some suggestions.I know this can be a hard one when clicking on a show that you’ve already seen a million times is so easy, cue me starting up Gilmore Girls again. I am very familiar with the comfort that rewatching a show you already know and love can provide! That being said starting up a new show can provide a great way to engage and the ability to focus your mind on something new! As well, it gives you the chance to find a new community of people online, and to engage with artists and fans who enjoy the show as much as you do. Which is a fantastic way to get a few more friends who relate to you. Much the same as a TV show is to start a new book! As an avid reader, I highly recommend trying to pick up a book or two! Keep in mind that there are more options for reading than sitting down with a long paperback with small printing and wording that’s impossible to read. Try an audiobook, graphic novel, young adult, fantasy, romance, etc! There are so many options open to everyone. There are some really cool apps like Goodreads or Storygraph to track what you are reading which can feel pretty motivating! There are graphs in Storygraph based on your reads which are really awesome to look back on. Some other ideas might be picking up a new hobby as well! Painting, knitting, and colouring may be fun activities to try when you’re sitting at home and don’t have much to do for a day. They can be really relaxing even if they don’t end up being a lifelong passion. I hope everyone is able to enjoy the winter season. Stay warm!
