Get Back into your Groove
By Ayrwyn Cousins
Hello everyone! Hopefully everyone is starting to settle into their new classes and routines for the semester. It can be really difficult to work up the motivation to attend classes regularly, wake up and go to sleep at decent times, and keep up your social life after having such a long and restful break. Almost everyone I know from CUE has all said that this semester feels extremely difficult to come back to. There are a few main causes to this such as; Seasonal depression, lack-of motivation, overtiredness, and some other more subjective factors may come into play (like personal mental health, work, and honestly, life itself can be pretty exhausting).
I have a few personal tips that may help you get back into the groove;
Try to engage with others. While it can be extremely difficult to get out of that ‘resting state’ that the holidays put you into, it is vital that you stay connected to your friends, family, and peers. Seeing others can be extremely helpful, and may even help you get back into the swing of things. Personally, I find that after I have been resting for an extended period of time I tend to shut myself away from those around me, but that has never really helped me. Stay connected, and seek support from those around you! It’s nice to know that you aren’t alone in your struggles.
My next tip would be to try and maintain a schedule or routine. Your classes can actually be helpful in this endeavor. Since you already will have developed some kind of schedule due to your class times, be sure to add other things like when to eat, relax, and sleep.
I cannot stress enough just how important sleep, and ‘down-time’, really is. Many people opt to do everything they possibly can to try and get them back into the school spirit, but it really isn’t helpful. Allow yourself that time to decompress. Sleep is also vital to have a productive, and healthy mind.
Finally, make sure you are eating. I find that a lot of days I simply ‘don’t have time to eat’ - but it's really not true. Make the time and feed your mind - it needs it.
Hopefully these tips will help you in getting back on track. Have a great semester everyone!
