Unapologetically Authentic
The colder months are quickly approaching, and so is the need for fresh clothing, especially for occasions like Halloween and winter festivities. This year, I decided to explore thrifting as a way to save money while still looking spiffy. Here’s what I found out about this budget-friendly and sustainable approach.
Why Thrifting is Good for you?
Thrifting is not just about saving money from buying brand new clothes; it’s about embracing sustainability and creativity. Instead of buying them at a high price, thrift stores offer a treasure trove of gently used items at a reasonable cost. This means you can find outfits that no one else will have. It’s perfect especially for standing out at upcoming parties.
Planning for Halloween & Winter Wardrobe
When it comes to Halloween, I wanted to create something different that won’t break the bank. I started by jotting down ideas for my costume and listing the essential pieces I would need. For instance, if I wanted to go for the Sk8er Boi look like Avril Lavigne, I would need a green shirt, bungee pants, canvas sneakers, and some accessories. As winter approaches, my goal is also looking for warm clothing without overspending. Thrifting during this season is especially rewarding, as many people donate winter clothes they no longer wear. I made a list of essentials: cozy sweaters, scarves, and boots.
Heading to the local thrift store in Fort Saskatchewan, I was pleasantly surprised to find a variety of costumes and accessories. I stumbled upon this green shirt that was perfect for my Sk8er Boi costume and it was only a loonie! I also discovered a beautifully patterned scarf for $3 and a pair of winter boots for $10. Not only did I save money, but I also ended up finding my costume and filled out my winter wardrobe.
Tips When Thrifting
Keep an Open Mind: You might find something in thrift stores that will never be thought of in your mind not until you find something that sparks your uniqueness and creativity.
Check for Quality: Take a thorough look to see if it's in good condition. Even though most stores only sell items in good condition, it is better to check first before buying it.
Visit Frequently: Thrift stores get new donations regularly, so make it a habit to visit often. You will never know especially when having $10 clothing bag sales, $1 color coded tag sales, or other special events.
Thrifting has not only helped save me money, but it also helps sustain our environment especially in these times of both financial and climate crises. So go forth, thrift to your heart’s content and never be afraid to be your unapologetically authentic self.
