Valentine’s Day
By Tegan Elliott
Valentine’s Day was tomorrow, and she still had no one to spend it with. Amy knew how it sounded, whining about being alone on Valentine’s Day, like half the internet. Still, she always spent the faithful day with someone before, even if it was just watching trashy romance movies with her sister, and everyone she knew had plans already. Her parents were having a date night, her sister had her new boyfriend, and her friends were all on various outings. It kind of bummed her out. Her phone started blasting some obscure rock song from the kitchen counter. Drew was calling. She dragged herself up off the couch, where she was very happy to sprawl out and moan about her loneliness, “Stop moping, I bring joyous news,” Drew sang as soon as she picked up. “I wasn’t moping,” she lied. “Details. Anyway, cancel all your plans for tomorrow.” “I happen to be a very busy lady, Drew. I’m having to fend off suitors left and right, here.” “Mhm. Amy, baby, babes, Ames, listen to this.” A kind of . . . crackle-static sound came over the phone. It sounded like he was shaking something at it. “I just got out of that fancy chocolate store we both love, and we have plans tomorrow. I bought like a thousand things, they had a sale.” Amy’s heart swelled at the thought of Drew making plans for them because he knew Amy didn’t have any. “And what would these plans entail,” she asked, totally keeping her cool. She wasn’t excited at all. “Well, my dear friend, we are going to have the best self-care hangout day ever. I’m talkin’ as much pizza and chocolate as we want, watching those indie movies you like in PJs and face masks, and I borrowed my sister’s nail polish collection. I’m bringing candles and giant plushies, this is gonna be the coziest Day you’ve ever had in your life.” Okay, she was super excited. The most excited. Drew always made the best plans. “I have the Day off. Be here at ten.” It looked like she wouldn’t be alone for Valentine’s Day after all.
