Ways to Get involved in Athletics

By Lauren Tetteh-Wayoe

It’s a New Year and sports are just starting up again so there is not much news to report… yet. 2023 is going to be a big year with Basketball, Volleyball, and Hockey concluding their seasons in two months. There will be lots of opportunities to come out and support games as well as a final Beer garden happening for Volleyball and Basketball on January 27th and 28th.

There are also other ways to get involved with athletics in the new year. As the new year’s tradition goes, many people have written a list of resolutions. Keep reading if any of these are on your list:

- To meet more people at Concordia

- To go to the gym

- To make new friends

- To learn a new hobby

- To step outside your comfort zone

- To get in shape

Campus rec events are the solution to your resolutions! Come down to the gym or to room AW207 to play a number of different games and meet new people. If you love sports or if you have never played, campus rec events are for everyone at any level. There is no commitment so you can show up whenever it works best for your schedule. Right before Christmas, Concordia hosted a huge end-of-semester dodgeball tournament which was a ton of fun. There will be another one coming up at the end of January…. Stay tuned! Some of the other sports will include yoga and open gyms with basketball, badminton, volleyball, or soccer being played!

Open gyms with a variety of sports are happening every Friday from 12-1 in the Gym! Yoga happens every Wednesday from 12-1! Here are the locations:

Jan 18th- Room AW207

Jan 25th- Room AW207

Feb 1st- Gym

Feb 8th- Room AW207

Feb 15.- Room AW207

Feb 22nd- Room AW207

Mar 1st- Gym

Mar 8th- Room AW207

March 15th- Room AW207

Mar 22- Room AW207

April 5th- Gym

All of the campus rec events will also be posted @cue_athletics on Instagram so keep an eye out!

Another athletics opportunity at Concordia is the PACT classes. There are soccer, volleyball, basketball, and badminton classes. You can find them under the physical education section in the course selection. Students in any year, program, and ability are able to partake in these courses. They are awesome classes to take if you are looking to improve your skills and meet some new people. They are all 3 credit courses with great professors that will help you feel comfortable in the sport that you chose.

You do not need to be on a Concordia team or a fan to get involved with sports in 2023, there are a ton of opportunities and fun just waiting to be had. I would love to see you all out there next Wednesday or Friday for a campus rec event or in one of the PACT classes.

Stay active this 2023!

If you don’t see a sport that you were hoping to try on the Campus Rec list or you have any questions about how to get involved with athletics at Concordia then please email me at athleticsrep@student.concordia.ab.ca
