Ways to Treat Yourself
By Ayrwyn Cousins
Most people think of February as the month of love because of Valentine's Day, a day for couples to get together and enjoy a romantic evening together. This is true, however; it is also very common for people to feel as if Valentine's Day is only for those in a relationship. This is untrue, Valentine's Day is not just about romantic love, it can be about friendship, family, platonic love, and self-love too. Many people suffer from a sort of depression, or lowered self-esteem around the holiday because they feel self-conscious about ‘being alone’ at this time. But, not being in a relationship during this time, or any time for that matter is not something to be ashamed of. Valentine's day is the holiday of love, so why not spend it loving yourself and those around you? I too have fallen victim to Valentine's Day depression many times throughout my life, but this year I am embracing Valentine’s Day for myself. I plan to spend the holiday relaxing and focusing on self-care/love. I also plan to remind those around me how much I value and love them. Here are some ideas for how you can spend your Valentine’s Day regardless of your relationship status:
Spa/self-care day: Set up your own mini spa, or self-care station with body lotions, face masks, nail polish, etc. Treat yourself!
Go to dinner and/or a movie with friends and enjoy the holiday together as friends!
Spend time with your family over facetime, in person, or over the phone!
Make cards for your friends and family! We used to make cards back in school, so why not carry on the tradition?
Go on a nice walk and get some treats, or your favorite drink (mine, for instance, is a London Fog).
Watch a movie cuddled up in your own bed and relax. Focus on taking care of your physical and mental health for the day.
Do your favorite hobby! (writing, reading, drawing/painting, etc.)
Go shopping.
Make Valentine's Day about spreading love, and about loving yourself. We all need to take time to show ourselves the love we deserve. The most important and loving thing you could do this Valentine’s Day is focus on being good to yourself. Everyone has some love to give, so make it about that. Make the 14th a happy day rather than a sad one!
