Why to Consider a Summer Internship

Many management students are returning to campus this fall with a completed four-month summer internship under their belt. Although it is not a proven fact, I have found that internships make better students. Allow me to explain; internships help students develop their passions while gaining experience in the workforce. This experience allows them to be more focused and motivated to obtain their degree and excel in their schoolwork throughout the semester. I, for one, can attest to this observation as I recently completed a summer internship with a local veterinary clinic in a management role. No matter your faculty, internships are available; and I encourage you to apply.

The first step to finding a fulfilling internship is applying to organizations that operate in a field that you are passionate about. It is important to find an organization whose values align with your own. Although you will typically be the one receiving an interview, it is important that you also interview the organization. This allows you to gain insight about the company, its culture, and the industry it is operating in. Not only does this help determine if the position is a good fit for you, but it can also help you determine if it is a field that you want to continue to pursue. That being said, don’t be afraid to apply into a field that is not related to your declared major or emphasis. Receiving a well-rounded experience is important when you are entering the workforce after graduation.

As much as an internship is to gain experience, you should also prepare yourself for a great reference letter. Take initiative, work hard, and make an impact because it will all contribute to how your supervisor remembers you when it comes time to write you a professional reference letter for future employment. Often students' first experience in their field comes through a summer internship, meaning their future employer is more likely to contact them for a reference than a previous summer job. Therefore, putting yourself in the best position for a strong recommendation is critical. Many students find future employment with their internship. However, by participating in an internship, you also build connections beyond the brand and network within the industry. This makes you more marketable as an employee later on as you have experience, but also industry connections.

Finally, ask questions! Do your work, complete your tasks, but remember to ask questions along the way about what co-workers enjoy about their jobs, benefits of the companies, and its role within the industry. Learning from those around you is as important as learning from your position within the organization. Whether you are participating in a paid or volunteer position, the knowledge you will gain is priceless. Nothing compliments your education better than hands-on experience in the form of a summer internship.

If you have questions about where to find internships, or want more information on applying, reach out to any of your management representatives.
